When Cyrus Daruwala, an office professional in Singapore, found his work laptop suddenly locked behind a Microsoft BitLocker screen he had never set up himself, he was staring down a stack of deadlines with no way to reach his files. This is the story of how Intelligent Computer Services (ICS) recovered 100% of his data in three days — and the cryptographic flaw that made it possible.
The Problem: A Ransomware-Triggered BitLocker Lockout
Cyrus was a normal office user with no history of manually enabling drive encryption. Without warning, his hard drive became inaccessible behind a BitLocker recovery screen demanding a 48-digit recovery key — a key he had never created, saved, or been shown. With active projects, presentations, and deadlines on the line, he needed his data back urgently.
Our Diagnosis
When Cyrus brought his drive to ICS, our engineers began with a full forensic analysis rather than taking the BitLocker prompt at face value. The investigation revealed that the lockout hadn’t been triggered by Cyrus enabling encryption himself — it was the result of a ransomware infection that had silently invoked Windows’ built-in BitLocker encryption as its extortion mechanism, a technique some ransomware strains use instead of deploying their own custom encryption routine.
The Recovery Process
Because a genuine, correctly-implemented BitLocker/AES encryption cannot be brute-forced, our approach depended entirely on how the ransomware itself had implemented the lock — not on attacking AES directly.
Our first step was to create a full, byte-for-byte forensic image of the drive using our PC-3000 data recovery system, so that every subsequent step of the investigation could be carried out safely on a working copy rather than risking the only copy of Cyrus’s original data.
Analysing that image, our engineers identified that the ransomware’s key-handling routine was flawed: it had not generated or protected the encryption key the way a properly implemented BitLocker deployment would have. That flaw left recoverable artifacts our team could use to reconstruct the decryption key, without needing the recovery key Cyrus never had.
Reconstructing the key and validating it safely against the imaged drive — without risking further damage to the original — took our team three full days of focused work, including through the weekend.
The Outcome
Once the key was reconstructed, ICS restored full access to Cyrus’s drive. 100% of his data was recovered — every file, every project, fully intact.
